Louis XVI

Louis XVI was a young French prince, Louis Auguste, son of the Dauphin, when he married young Austrian princess Marie Antoinette.

Louis XVI was born on August 23, 1754 and Louis XVI was executed on January 21, 1793. King Louis XVI was King of France and Navarre from 1774 until 1791, and then King of the French from 1791 to 1792.

How did Louis XVI die?

During the French Revolution, King Louis XVI was suspended and arrested during the Insurrection of the 10th of August 1792. King Louis XVI was tried by the National Convention. King Louis XVI was found guilty of treason, and King Louis XVI was executed on January 21, 1793. The execution of King Louis XVI signaled the end of the absolutist monarchy in France and would eventually bring about the rise of Napoleon.

Louis XVI was preceded as king by his grandfather, Louis XV. Louis XVI 's father was the king's only son, the Dauphin de France (1729-1765) but he died young and never ascended the throne. Louis XVI 's mother was Marie-Josèphe of Saxony, second wife of the Dauphin, and the daughter of Frederick Augustus II of Saxony, Prince-Elector of Saxony and King of Poland.

On May 16, 1770, when prince Louis Auguste was 15 and she 14, the future King Louis XVI married Marie Antoinette, daughter of Francis I of Austria and Empress Maria Theresa, a Habsburg. Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette had four children.
